What is a device driver?
Friday, January 16th, 2009 | Author: admin

A device driver is a software component that controls a device. A driver behaves like a translator between a program and a device, each device need its own driver to work with the operating system.
Many drivers such us keyboard drivers, mouse drivers, disk drives, and printer drivers, come with the operating system.

When you connect a new device to your PC, the operating system needs to recognize that device by its device driver. Most of the new operating systems like: Windows 2000 , Windows XP and Vista, have a plug and play system that recognizes most of the devices automatically. They try to install the device driver automatically from their driver database. If it can’t find the driver, it asks the user to provide it with the right driver for the device.
